I’ve really been enjoying Windows 10, even while in the Technical Preview mode. I think they’ve done a fabulous job at bridging the gap between the “traditional desktop” and the “metro interface” (the “convergence” thing). I’m also quite giddy for the day I can say “Hey Cortana! Open Visual Studio” and BAM there it is. I’ve been experiencing Windows 10 using VMWare Fusion. Unfortunately the typical “dynamic sizing” video behavior isn’t working and going to full screen mode doesn’t help either. After a little tweaking and testing, I’ve found a trick that works.
The trick is to simply not use the VMWare Fusion video driver at all. The build in display drivers that are coming in the technical previews work just fine and provide the higher resolutions you need. So I simply uninstalled VMWare Tools, which removed the video driver and restored the default one. After a system reboot I reinstalled VMWare Tools, but I used the “custom” option and omitted installing the video driver. I still need all the other benefits (like copying files between VM and Desktop) that VMWare Tools provides. Problem solved!
Without having the SVGA driver, you won’t get the added bonus of “dynamically resizing” your desktop window and having the resolution auto adjust. This wasn’t the end of the world for me. I was happy to be able to use some resolutions that matched my MacBook Pro display, or larger 24” monitor, especially when going into full screen mode.
Oh, another quick tip. Not sure what your screen resolutions are? The display settings only deal with default or “scaled” resolutions. The default options can be found by clicking the apple icon at the top left and select “About this Mac.” The second tab has your display resolutions.

Thanks for posting this! Ran into the same issue. Resolution was off along with Windows not recognizing multiple monitors.
I followed your directions but unfortunately for me it still did not work. So I modified the VMWare Tools install and added the SVGA drivers back and viola… it worked. All my monitors, resolution and dynamic sizing so you may want to give it another go…

The same for me. Followed the instructions with uninstalling VMWare Tools, re-installed without SVGA drivers, and then chose “Modify” when doing a re-installation, and there it was, working just perfectly.
My virtual machines shows this message (Cannot connect file “/Volumes/MOS/VmWare BLACK /en_windows_10_multiple_editions_x64_dvd_6846432.iso” as a CD-ROM image: Could not find the file) and shows a black desktop. How do I fix this please? I just upgraded my mac to OSMajove
Hmm, did you lose the ISO? Is it in a different place perchance? You should be able to modify the disc settings to not mount that ISO anymore and avoid the issue.
I had the same issue. Didn’t need to reinstall, just repaired VMWare Tools and it worked fine after reboot.

Thanks for the post. It got me further along. I did find that if you do a manual uninstall of the tools from the guest, restart, then do an install from the Fusion menu it will work.
If you already have VMware tools installed when upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10. And after upgrade it doesn’t allow you to change the screen size. Simply uninstall VMware tools, reboot and reinstall VMware tools :)

I had the same problem trying to set resolution to 1920×1080 (iMac). I uninstalled vmware tools (remove), rebooted vm, installed vmware tools (custom – deselected SVGA driver),rebooted vm, installed vmware tools (repair – selected SVGA driver) – full list of resolutions were then available.
